Free laptop and internet access (Home Access)
Becta's Next Generation Learning campaign aims to address the digital divide by providing computers and Internet access to eligible families. An estimated one million children do not have a computer at home and 35 per cent of families have no home access to the internet. The aim of the programme is for every child to have equal access to the internet at home to assist with their learning. Home Access launches nationally in January 2010.

As we head into the winter season, what better time to focus on protecting the health of ourselves and our families, including protection from swine flu. There has been a small decrease in the number of people with swine flu-like symptoms nationally, however, we are seeing an increase in the rates within Kent. So:
Help protect yourself and your family & friends from swine flu in 3 simple steps
To reduce the impact and spread of the swine flu virus during the winter months, we are all being encouraged to take the opportunities offered through the government’s seasonal and swine flu vaccination programmes. Contact your GP Surgery if you believe you are at particular risk. See detailed information at http://knet2/staff-zone/wellbeing-in-kcc/promoting-your-health-be-well/flu-and-swine-flu
Help stop the spread of the flu virus by taking simple hygiene precautions. Catch it Bin it Kill it really works. Download the poster and display it in your office: http://knet2/staff-zone/wellbeing-in-kcc/promoting-your-health-be-well/Flu%20-%20Catch%20It%20Bin%20It%20Kill%20It%20-%20Poster.pdf

Kent Poverty Innovation Pilot - the 'Poverty Pilot'
49,000 children live in poverty in Kent. Child poverty affects a young person’s health, educational attainment and life chances, and may impact on both their adulthood and their own children.
The Kent Poverty Innovation Pilot is a 2 year Government-funded project to test innovative approaches to alleviating child poverty. Building on existing capacity it tackles the underlying causes of poverty to make a sustainable difference and will be able to influence Kent’s strategy for the eradication of child poverty.
It is taking place in areas of Kent with particularly high need:
Thanet 1 LCSP
Thanet 2 LCSP
Swale Urban LCSP
Parkwood Estate, Maidstone
This represents a total population of 20,310, with 45% of children under 16 (2,241) living in income deprived families. By focusing on these areas, the pilot activities will be tested across a district, a Local Children’s Services Partnership and a single neighbourhood in coastal, urban and rural communities.
Project activities
Personal Social Health and Economic Education - Economic Education, including understanding money management will be trialled in secondary schools together with the development of new PSHE resources for children and young people to target those aspects where there is a demonstrable local need.
Family Group Conferencing - FGCs brings family members together, with the support of a professional facilitator, to discuss problems, concerns and barriers to change and then to agree on ways forward.
Click links for 2010 FGC information on FGC and referral form
Family Mentoring - This project will run during the second year of the pilot and build community resilience by sharing resources between families through targeted family to family support..
Family learning - Targeted learning to help families who may not traditionally access training. By gaining qualifications this can prepare them for work readiness, in response to welfare reform, and help them on a career path out of poverty.
