The Environment as the Third Teacher

Page from The Environment as a Third Teacher

The Environment as the Third Teacher
Practitioners from schools and pre-schools in the Canterbury City and Country Cluster have been working together on a project that has been called 'The Environment as the Third Teacher' and their work has been compiled into a book that is currently being published. One copy of the book will be circulated to settings during the summer months. Further copies can be purchased from the Advisory Service Kent at Oxford Road.

The notion of the 'Environment as the Third Teacher' comes from the philosophies of the Reggio Emilia pre-schools in Northern Italy, that there are two great influences in the education of young children; the home and the school. They believe that there is a third contributor, the environment that also makes a significant contribution.

Children can engage in the learning process through the opportunities provided by the environment. These opportunities need to be stimulating and inspiring to children, as they become involved. The resources should be provided in such a way that the children can not resist touching, exploring, investigating and asking questions…… and thus problem solving and thinking logically to make sense of their world.

We share this book with you, knowing that the contents are not necessarily original, but we hope that our stories and successes may impact on your setting and be an inspiration for you and your children!

Lets think about it

Publication - Lets think About it This publication draws together some of the work carried out by Kent curriculum advisors and educational psychologists as part of a two-day training programme for primary school teachers on Thinking Skills. The booklet includes ideas from teachers for using thinking tools such as 6 hats and mindmaps, many of which would also be applicable at Key Stage 3. Case studies provide innovative examples of implementing the ideas in Kent Primary Schools and some of the theoretical background to thinking skills is covered.
