Kent County Council is committed to working in partnership with its schools to explore how the use of new and emerging technologies can improve educational standards. Wireless networks enable administrators, teachers and learners to access data and information flexibly without being tied to specified locations.
Becta, the Government agency that provides advice and guidance on technology use in schools, recognises the educational value of mobility and wireless, and has not identified any risks associated with the use of wireless networks. Kent will consider any future guidance from both Becta and the Health Protection Agency.
Whilst recognising a media interest, there is no evidence that wireless networks present a hazard to either children or staff. Wireless networks operate at very low energy levels i.e. 5% of the energy of a mobile phone, which operates in the same frequency band, and the Health Protection Agency has not identified any risk associated with wireless network use.
Where laptops are used, there is a potential for discomfort due to heat generated by the processor and battery. For this reason it is important to ensure adequate ventilation for the device, and we will in future recommend that laptops are placed on desks or other hard surfaces if used for extended periods. It is equally important that schools address issues of posture and ambient lighting when using such devices.
Manufacturers are constantly seeking to improve device performance to reduce heat and energy use, and many devices are now handheld, and not designed for use on the lap.
Kent schools use wireless effectively and report no health or safety issues. Kent County Council Primary and Secondary Strategies, produced in consultation with school leaders, recognise the educational value of wireless and support its use.
The information and advice that is provided has been agreed with the Health & Safety Team as appropriate and acceptable advice.
